Dojo Etiquette
Proper observance of dojo etiquette is as important to aikido training as learning technique. Please follow these guidelines so that practice stays safe and grounded in courtesy.
Respect
Approach the dojo, the instructors, and your fellow students with respect, even when it means setting aside comfort or pride. Every student, regardless of fitness, age, or size, is a chance to grow, so be patient working with someone less experienced. If you are a beginner, working with a senior student shows you how a technique would hold up in the real world.
Entering and leaving the dojo
When entering or leaving the dojo, bow toward the shomen (the front of the dojo). If you need to leave the mat, ask the instructor first and return to practice promptly. No shoes are allowed on the mat.
Addressing the instructor
It is courteous to bow and say "thank you, Sensei" when receiving guidance or assistance. When the instructor addresses you or your partner, stop practice and listen.
Punctuality
Be on time. Line up and sit in seiza (kneeling posture) three to five minutes before class begins. If you arrive late, sit in seiza at the edge of the mat until the instructor invites you to join.
Proper sitting
Do not lean against the walls or sit with your legs stretched out. Sit in seiza, or in agura (cross-legged) if seiza is uncomfortable.
Hygiene
Keep fingernails and toenails clipped short. If you get a cut or scrape during practice, step off the mat and bandage it.
Personal belongings
Remove watches, rings, and all other jewelry before practice to avoid injuring your partners.
